πŸ’™ Today we brought together our incredible volunteers from Stockwood and Frome Vale at the Vassall Centre for a volunteer celebration and reflection day. πŸŽ‰

It was an opportunity to pause, connect and recognise the huge contribution our volunteers make to their communities every week. Together, we explored what community really means and reflected on the barriers that can prevent people from joining in.

For many people, walking through the door of a new group or community space can feel daunting. Volunteers play a vital role in bridging that gap; offering a smile 😊, a warm welcome 🀝, a cup of tea β˜• and a conversation that helps someone feel they belong.

Throughout the day, we shared stories about the power of connection ❀️.

Again and again, volunteers spoke about people who had arrived feeling nervous, isolated or unsure, only to be welcomed by others and encouraged to stay. These stories reminded us of the power of a good chat! πŸ’¬ Taking the time to listen, talk and share a cup of tea might seem simple, but it can make an extraordinary difference to someone’s confidence, wellbeing and sense of belonging.

We also discussed our motivations for volunteering, how Bristol Charities can continue to improve the support we provide to our volunteers, and how we can ensure volunteers feel safe, confident and supported when navigating complex situations. Listening to our volunteers’ experiences and ideas will help shape the future of our community spaces.

Of course, no celebration would be complete without food! 🍽️ We enjoyed lunch together and were treated to some fantastic cakes from the wonderful Props 🍰 – the perfect accompaniment to a day of conversation, reflection and appreciation.

“Community starts with connection. Often, the difference between someone feeling isolated and someone feeling they belong is a simple conversation. Our volunteers create those moments every day. They are the friendly face, the listening ear and the bridge that helps people take that first step into a welcoming space. We are incredibly grateful for the compassion, commitment and kindness they bring to our communities, and today was a chance to celebrate them and learn how we can continue to support them.”
