Thursday 8th May saw people across the UK honouring the 80th anniversary of VE Day—and our Bristol Charities Almshouse communities were no exception. At Barstaple House, John Foster’s Almshouses, and Haberfield House, residents came together for a day of shared memories, music, food, and community spirit.

While for many, VE Day may feel like a distant part of history, for some of our Almshouse residents, the memories remain vivid. A number were able to recall the very first VE Day, while others shared stories of rationing, blackouts, and air-raid shelters—memories that brought an added depth and poignancy to the celebrations.

There was plenty of joy too. Barstaple House residents enjoyed a beautiful violin duet – including classics like Danny Boy and a rousing group rendition of We’ll Meet Again. Over at Haberfield House, residents sang along to Dame Vera Lynn, and conversations flowed about the war, the peace that followed, and the lives built since.

“It’s not just about housing – Almshousing goes well beyond the four walls. It is about people, shared histories, and belonging – creating and enriching communities. On days like VE Day it is a privilege to see those communities coming together.”

Dave Peregrine, Director of Housing & Communities, Bristol Charities

The celebrations were made even more special with a delicious buffet and barbecue. Local councillor Mark Weston joined the John Foster’s and Barstaple events, offering heartfelt reflections before the feast began. Meanwhile, a guest at Haberfield House remarked:

“I’ve seen these faces on the high street, but never spoken to them – today, I felt like part of something. I’ll stop and chat next time.”

The raffle at Barstaple House – featuring prizes donated by residents – raised over £200 for the RNLI, a brilliant example of community spirit in action.

Of course, there were also more reflective moments. Stories of loved ones lost, and years long gone reminded us of the enduring weight of remembrance. But laughter, song, and companionship ensured that new memories were created too – ones that will live on just as long.

“I remember VE Day the first-time round – I was just a girl, but I’ll never forget the singing in the street. Today brought it all back.”
