More than a Makeover: The Life Behind the Before

There’s something universally heartwarming about a before-and-after story. The peeling wallpaper, the crumbling kitchen units, the worn carpet – all swept away in a whirlwind of paint, power tools, and smiles. It’s no surprise that programmes like DIY SOS and Sort Your Life Out (a firm favourite of mine) are so popular. We love transformation. We love the moment the curtains are drawn back, and someone walks into a space that finally feels like home.

But here’s the truth: a fresh coat of paint is never the end of the story.

Recently, our community team undertook a house transformation for a mum of three children, living in a property that had fallen into serious disrepair. Damp walls, limited furniture including no real beds, no flooring, cramped spaces – not just a housing issue, but a daily reminder of life feeling impossible and overwhelming.

Over the course of a few days, with volunteers and staff rolling up their sleeves, the Bristol Charities team gave her home a complete makeover. A brighter, safer, warmer space for her and her children. A real moment of hope.

And yes, it was magic. The reaction – emotional, relieved, quietly trusting that change might be possible – was something we’ll never forget. These are the kinds of stories that make the news and rightly tug on heartstrings. But we must be honest:

This is not a finished product.

Because real transformation doesn’t end when the paint dries. What comes next is less photogenic, but just as vital: helping this mum navigate the benefits system, access mental health support, feel less alone, and slowly build the stability that every family deserves. This transformation wasn’t something done to the house — it was something done with and through the incredible energy of the woman who lives here. From day one, this mum showed up with determination, vision, and a fierce love for her children. Her motivation charged through every fibre of the project. She wasn’t just rebuilding a space – she was rebuilding her place in the community, creating a safe, welcoming home. This was a truly bi-directional effort; her self-empowerment and commitment

inspired every person involved. We couldn’t have done it without her. She is, quite simply, a wonderful mum and outstanding member of our community.

Indeed, Bristol Charities’ outstanding Family Support Officer, Lashana Keen, has already gone above and beyond to secure life-changing funding and vital mental health support for the family – a powerful step toward systemic change that will, over time, help turn the dial from surviving to thriving.

It’s important to say this, not to dim the wholehearted, human joy of what’s been achieved, but to honour the truth of what long-term community work actually looks like. The ‘after’ photo is just one frame in a much longer film.

At Bristol Charities, we believe in celebrating the moments of uplift and committing to the long road. We’re here for the high-fives and happy tears, but also for the follow-up phone calls, the housing advocacy meetings, the quiet cups of tea when things still feel hard.

Lashana explains, “We make sure that we really understand the people we work with, and the obstacles they face. Over time, we look at both the big and the small stuff: What furniture do they need? What décor do they want? What is frustrating them? How can we support access to health services? Would they like help managing their finances better? What do they think will most help their situation? It’s about working with the family to build lasting stability, not just quick fixes.”

So yes – we’re proud of what we did in that house. We’re proud of the collective effort, the teamwork, the visible change. But more than that, we’re proud to be part of this family’s journey in the days, months and years to come.

Because the real story isn’t just about what we transformed – it’s about what we continue to build.

Want to help us go beyond the makeover? The transformation of this home is just one piece of the puzzle. To truly change lives, we need long-term support systems that help families thrive – not just survive.

👉 Join us in championing the slow, steady work that creates lasting change – whether by volunteering, donating, or simply sharing stories like this that highlight the deeper journey behind the headlines.

Together, we can make sure that behind every fresh coat of paint, there’s a future filled with stability, dignity, and hope.

This story also reminds us why Mental Health Awareness Week matters.

This year’s theme is Community — a powerful reminder that mental health isn’t just an individual experience, but something shaped by the connections, support and solidarity around us. The transformation of this home was only possible because of a community coming together – staff, volunteers, neighbours, and, most importantly, the family themselves.

At Bristol Charities, we believe that real wellbeing is built through these shared efforts, and we’re proud to stand alongside those we support, not just in moments of crisis, but in the everyday work of rebuilding and belonging.
