This weekend, communities across the country will come together for the Great Get Together, the annual initiative inspired by Jo Cox’s belief that “we have far more in common than that which divides us.” Taking place from 19–21 June 2026, this year’s event is particularly poignant as it marks ten years since Jo Cox’s death and celebrates the power of kindness, unity and community connection.

At Bristol Charities, these values are reflected every day through the work happening across our community hubs, partnerships and neighbourhood programmes. From wellbeing activities and creative sessions to community cafés, youth groups and local events, our hubs exist to create welcoming spaces where people can connect, belong and support one another.

As Helen Godwin, Mayor of the West of England, reflected,
“Now, more than ever, Jo’s values of kindness and respect are vital.”

At Vassall Community Hub, activities taking place during the Great Get Together weekend include Tai Chi and Poetry in the Pond – sessions that encourage mindfulness, creativity and shared wellbeing. The Hub also hosts a wide range of regular community activities throughout the week, from youth clubs and community cafés to exercise groups, digital skills support and inclusive family activities.

Meanwhile, Stockwood Community Hub continues to bring local residents together through community-led projects, activities and events designed to help Stockwood become a healthy, happy and flourishing neighbourhood. Working in collaboration with local organisations and residents, the Hub supports opportunities for volunteering, local leadership and neighbourhood connection.

Across Bristol, communities will also be celebrating in many different ways, including Hillfields Community Garden’s Summer Fair on Saturday 20 June – another opportunity for local people to come together in celebration and community spirit.

Sophie Jerrold, Director of Fundraising and Communications at Bristol Charities, said:

“Community connection does not always happen through large-scale events; often it is built through small, meaningful moments of shared experience. Across Bristol Charities, we see every day how spaces like our community hubs help people feel welcome, connected and supported. The Great Get Together is an important reminder that kindness, creativity and wellbeing can bring people together in powerful ways, and that strong communities are built through inclusion, compassion and shared experience.”

The Great Get Together reminds us that community is strengthened not only through celebration, but through the everyday acts of care, welcome and solidarity that happen in neighbourhoods across Bristol all year round. Bristol Charities is proud to support the people, partnerships and places helping to make that happen every day.
