At last week’s Staff Day, colleagues from across the organisation came together to reflect, reconnect and look ahead.

The day began with a mindfulness session led by Diana Finch, offering an opportunity to pause and reflect on how we can be present for others with intention while maintaining healthy boundaries.

Colleagues then shared achievements from the past year, across Housing, Total Investment and Community, as well as ambitions for the future. Dave Peregrine, Paul Smith, Charity White and Charlie Ferdinando all emphasised the importance of collaboration, turning challenges into opportunities; highlighting the wide-ranging impact flowing through a diversity of strategic programmes.

We heard from Becky King, Director of Props Bristol, whose passion and commitment to supporting adults with learning disabilities shone through her interview with Jo Stokes. Becky spoke about the importance of creating opportunities that enable people not simply to be supported, but to thrive, develop confidence, build relationships and live fulfilling lives. Her insights provided both inspiration and practical learning, reminding us of the transformative impact that can be achieved when people are given the opportunity, encouragement and belief to flourish.

There was time to reflect by Sophie Jerrold Jasmine Williams on the Launch Event and an opportunity to consider what we have learned, what we should celebrate and where we go next. Colleagues then took part in an interactive session focused on our organisational values. Miranda Frost Working together, we explored both the values that currently define Bristol Charities and the aspirational values that will help shape our future.

We received an introduction to the new Employee Handbook by Diana Finch, with the conversation naturally highlighting the importance of clarity and good communication.

In his closing remarks, Julian Mines (CEO) left colleagues with a simple but powerful thought: “It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.”

Julian reflected that, while the challenges facing society remain significant, Bristol Charities is well placed to be a part of the response, and that this is due, in no small part, to the commitment, expertise, and compassion of its people.

He emphasised the importance of supporting one another through the tough days and of being a light for each other, as well as for the people we serve.

Every act of support, every partnership formed, every opportunity created, and every life improved represents another candle lit. Together, these individual lights create something far greater: a collective force for positive change in the city we love.
