Clearing the Woods, Building Community: A Day of Connection and Care

17th June 2025 | Community Impact

‹ Back to News

Last month, something wonderful happened in Stockwood.

Residents, volunteers, families, and staff gathered for a community day with a simple mission: to clear and restore the forest area by the Children’s Centre. Tools were picked up, gloves pulled on, chainsaws fired up and wheelbarrows loaded – but what emerged from the day was far more than a tidier green space.

It was a reminder of what we all need: connection.

People who had never met before shared stories as they hacked back brambles. Children played while their parents chatted nearby. Neighbours paused to swap tips about gardening or share memories of what the forest had meant to them. Some residents came just to lend a hand. Others came to connect with people.

And that’s exactly why this kind of day matters – especially during Loneliness Awareness Week.

loneliness awareness

Loneliness can affect anyone, at any time. It’s not always obvious – sometimes it hides behind a busy schedule or a cheerful smile. But its impact is deep, touching our physical and mental health, our sense of belonging, and our ability to thrive.

At Bristol Charities, we believe that community is the antidote. When we create spaces where people can come together for everyday acts of shared purpose – we create something lasting. We build resilience. We build friendship. We build hope.

As one resident put it:

“I didn’t think I’d know anyone here, but I’m leaving with two new phone numbers and a plan to meet for coffee next week.”

“My husband and I struggle to go out due to his Parkinson’s disease, yet this event was such a welcoming and safe space for us – and the BBQ was a bonus too!”

Charlie Fernandino, Bristol Charities’ Head of Community Hubs, says: “I was absolutely delighted with the turnout for this event. It brought people together across generations and communities, united by a shared ambition to create something meaningful and lasting for Stockwood. The atmosphere was full of genuine connection and good spirits – a real antidote to loneliness. This is exactly the kind of community-led energy that can build something sustainable for Stockwood.”

Powered by Partnership: Greater Stockwood Alliance 🌿

And crucially, we don’t do this work alone. One of the driving forces behind this day – and behind much of the incredible change happening in Stockwood – is the Greater Stockwood Alliance.

This passionate grassroots organisation has been instrumental in galvanising local action and amplifying the voices of Stockwood residents. Their deep knowledge of the community, commitment to inclusion, and tireless advocacy have changed the face of local development – making it more responsive, more representative, and more rooted in lived experience.

By working in close partnership with the Greater Stockwood Alliance, Bristol Charities are building not just projects, but relationships – ones that strengthen trust and enable long-term impact.

Together, we’re not parachuting in solutions. We’re co-creating them.

This forest clear-up was just one of many examples of what’s possible when local people are empowered to lead – supported by organisations who listen, learn, and act in collaboration.

Working Together for Wider Impact

This community day was also part of a broader effort through the Impact Alliance – a collaboration of local VCSE (voluntary, community and social enterprise) organisations, working citywide to address loneliness and isolation. It’s proof of what can happen when we share not only resources, but vision.

Loneliness Awareness Week is hosted by Marmalade Trust, the UK’s leading charity dedicated to raising awareness of loneliness and helping people make meaningful connections. Their leadership continues to shine a spotlight on what so often remains hidden.

The forest clear-up may have started as a practical task, but it became a powerful example of what happens when we prioritise people over problems – and connection over isolation.

Huge thanks to the Greater Stockwood Alliance, our volunteers, staff, residents, and every pair of hands and heart that made the day possible.

Let’s keep clearing paths – and building bridges.
