11–17 May | Theme: Action

Mental health is not just an individual issue, it is shaped by the communities we live in, the connections we build, and the opportunities available to us.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re reflecting on how we take action at Bristol Charities, supporting individuals, strengthening communities, and embedding wellbeing into the way we work.

🌱 Taking action for our communities

At the heart of our work is a simple belief:
Strong, connected communities are fundamental to good mental health.

One of our key strategic goals is to support community transformation, helping neighbourhoods move away from the life-limiting effects of poor housing, insufficient income and ill health and towards places where people can thrive.

This means thinking holistically about wellbeing:

  • Economic stability
  • Physical health
  • Social connection
  • Mental and emotional wellbeing

Because when these come together, individuals, families and communities are better able to flourish.

🤝 Taking action for the people we support

Across our community hubs and partnerships, we support a wide range of activities that contribute to mental wellbeing, often in simple, powerful ways.

From structured support to informal connection, these include:

  • Talk Club sessions supporting men’s mental health
  • Meditation and wellbeing activities that create space for reflection
  • Lunch clubs and social groups that reduce isolation and build connection
  • Partnership work through networks like the Impact Alliance, exploring new models of collaboration to address loneliness

These activities may look different on the surface, but they share a common purpose:
👉 creating spaces where people feel seen, supported and connected.

💬 Taking action for our people

We also recognise the importance of supporting the wellbeing of our staff and volunteers. Bristol Charities is at the start of its journey proactively creating the conditions for great wellbeing for our people.

We are committed to creating a culture where:

  • wellbeing is prioritised
  • conversations around mental health are open and supported
  • people feel equipped to look after themselves and others

Through our internal wellbeing and EDI work, we are continuing to explore how we can strengthen this further, ensuring our teams have the tools, confidence and support they need.

💡 A shared responsibility

This year’s theme, Action, is a reminder that mental health is everyone’s responsibility.

It’s in the everyday moments:

  • checking in with a colleague
  • creating inclusive, welcoming spaces
  • building stronger local connections
  • designing services that respond to real need

At Bristol Charities, we are committed to this work, continuing to learn and taking action that supports not just individuals, but the wider systems and communities that shape wellbeing.

Because lasting change happens when we work together.
